Market signals

What changed—and what to do next.

Cyber risk

South Africa's Information Regulator received 2,693 security-compromise notifications in 2025/26, up from 2,375 a year earlier. A further 800 were reported from April 2026 to 30 July.

Buyer action

Make security a buying requirement: insist on MFA, tested backups, patching, incident ownership and clear controls for every supplier handling personal information.

Device planning

Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 now receive security updates only through 10 October 2028, with limited support expectations.

Buyer action

Audit every device now and separate upgradeable PCs from replacement candidates. A phased refresh is safer and easier to budget than an emergency migration.

Connectivity

ICASA reports fixed-broadband subscriptions grew 19.3% in 2025, led by 22.0% growth in fibre-to-the-home and fibre-to-the-building subscriptions.

Buyer action

Treat connectivity as workplace infrastructure: specify the router, Wi-Fi coverage, switching, security, power continuity and support model—not only the fibre line.

Resilience

Telecommunications theft-related costs rose 189% in 2025, while sector investment shifted toward fixed networks (+11.9%) and away from mobile infrastructure (-21.0%).

Buyer action

For branches and distributed teams, price backup power, mobile failover, equipment protection and service-response times into the solution from the start.

Coverage

4G/LTE reached 99.5% of South Africa's population in 2025 and 5G reached 58.0%, but rural 5G remained uneven and fell as low as 13% in the Northern Cape.

Buyer action

National coverage is not a site survey. Validate signal, capacity, device compatibility and failover at every operating location before committing.

Affordability

ICASA's March 2026 review priced the 2GB mobile-data basket at R152, below its affordability benchmark, while entry-level fixed broadband remained above the benchmark at R309.

Buyer action

Compare total operating value—not headline price. Reliability, user count, upload speed, support and downtime can outweigh a cheaper monthly connection.

Public sector

Gauteng allocated R1.9 billion to digital transformation for 2026/27, including 300 new provincial-network sites, stronger cyber resilience and a responsible-AI office.

Buyer action

ICT suppliers serving institutions must evidence delivery capacity, information security, user enablement, lifecycle support and measurable local impact.

Circular ICT

South Africa is expanding e-waste recycling pilots under its National Waste Management Strategy and Extended Producer Responsibility rules for electrical and electronic equipment.

Buyer action

Every refresh plan should include an asset register, secure data wiping, reuse or take-back routes, and evidence of responsible recycling.
